TAR SANDS 101

The Alberta tar sands have become an international example of how industry, driven by profit, can impose the most inhumane and destructive conditions upon communities and the environment. The health of indigenous communities in Fort Chipewyan and Fort Mackay (north of the Athabasca tar sands) is being completely ignored in order to continue tar sands production while rates of cancer in these communities rise. Guestworkers are being exploited for their labour as a result of not having any oppurtunity to obtain citizenship in Canada leaving them with the constant threat of deportation. And the tar sands impact on the environment has been well documented: producing 5 times more greenhouse gas emmissions than conventional oil, currently consuming approximately the same amount of gas required to heat 3.2 million homes, using upto 4 barrels of water for every barrel of crude produced and creating enormous toxic lakes from the waste that is produced. These are just some of the environmental and social concerns - there are many more.
